Hollywood lost another great today, comedian Phyllis Diller died today at the age of 95. She paved the way for woman in the comedy world, which up until Diller had been dominated by men.
The talented woman with the cackling laugh passed away at her home in Los Angeles. According to her longtime manager Milt Suchin “she died peacefully in her sleep with a smile on her face.” Phyllis is survived by three of her five children from her first marriage to Sherwood Anderson Diller, the marriage lasted 26 years. It was during that time that she made her way in Hollywood. After Sherwood and Phyllis divorced she married actor Warde Donovan, that marriage lasted ten years. The two did not have any children.
Although she had a very long and pretty freaking amazing career as a comedian Phyllis didn’t actually begin her career until she was 37 years old. Up until that point she was a homemaker raising her children. So how does a homemaker end up a comedic icon? Well a move to Los Angeles and a close friendship with the legendary Bob Hope helped pave the way for this hysterical woman. In fact it was her TV specials with Hope back in the 1960’s that really got her noticed. From that point on it was full steam ahead for the sassy lady. Along with her rapid-fire stand up routine she was very successful in, film, TV, movies and Broadway. Yes she really could do it all.
It may have been her comedic talent that got her noticed but later in life she became just as known for her many plastic surgeries as her comedy. She was not shy at all about talking about her many surgeries. Diller’s sense of style was another thing that made her stand out above the rest, from her wild wigs to her crazy dresses to hide her body she knew how to stand out from the crowd.
Joan, Roseanne, Ellen are just a few who can thank the amazingly talented, raucous and super funny Phyllis Diller for showing that a woman can not only hang in a man’s word but take it by storm. Hollywood said good-by to another great today. Diller may be gone but her comedy will live on forever.
RIP Phyllis Diller.
