Concert Picks: 8 Bit Weapon, My Gold Mask, Greenhorse…

8bitweapon Concert Picks: 8 Bit Weapon, My Gold Mask, Greenhorse...

Not only is it the weekend, but it’s the beginning of a new month and the start of the summer. To be honest, if your Slip N’ Slide’s the only draw, we suggest pinning the bleh on  someone else and have a night out at the expense of your awesomeness. However you choose to do it, as usual we’re offering the musical option — from retro to modern to futuristic genres (and an experimental twist of everything in between), boring is so not in the cards. Check out our picks for the weekend below:

  • 8 Bit Weapon | Friday, June 1 | 7:00 pm | All Ages | Free | Amoeba Music, Hollywood, CA – Map | The great thing about music and experimentation is that if it can be thought of, it likely can be done. And with gaming never going out of style, it only makes sense to play around with what makes up the soundtrack of so many person’s lives. Think Anamanaguchi, if only with a little more dark and rough edges and all the glitter of your favorite SNES game, as can be heard during their music video for the track “Bits With Byte”. With ComputeHer – for more information, call (323) 245-6400.
  • Zebu | Friday, June 1 | 8:00 pm | All Ages | $7 | Death By Audio, Brooklyn, NY – Map | Knowing you’re awesome and actually delivering the awesome are two different things. Thankfully, those things are something that the currently Brooklyn-based band is aware of. There’s a highly experimental tone that bridges the gaps between avant garde and punk, and jazz and alternative, and it is seemingly effortlessly done  in the way that only an artistic band would care to do it in. Very man behind the curtain esque, except, well, on a stage. With Real Life Time Machines, Omnivore, Inky Jack.
  • My Gold Mask | Saturday, June 2 | 9:00 pm | 21+ | $10 | Hideout, Chicago, IL – Map | There’s such rich flavor contained within My Gold Mask’s delicate balance of vocals and instrumentals. Cool enough to be different, modern enough to be inclusive, forward-thinking enough to be ahead of the pack, there isn’t anything not to love about the Chicago-based outfit’s comprehensive style. You’ll feel that much more cool with just one listen. With Light Foils, Love and Radiation - Buy Tickets
  • Greenhorse | Saturday, June 2 | 9:00 pm | 21+ | Free | The Satellite, Los Angeles, CA – Map | The cold wave pop- and electronic-driven trio delivers and ultra crisp and clean sound, all against a harmonic rock backdrop. Never underestimating their listeners’ sensibilities, their sharp edge is shuffled in with smooth, hypnotic melodies. Greenhorse is ear candy at its finest. With Hearts + Minutes, The World Record, yOya – for more information, check out the venue’s event page or call (323) 661-4380.
  • Fiona Silver | Sunday, June 3 | 10:00 pm | 21+ | Free | Ace Hotel, New York, NY – Map | Having grown up in New York in and around a budding music scene, this young Brooklyn-based artist has a built-upon history that makes her a strong force in the singer-songwriter category. It’s one thing to exceed expectations, but it’s another thing to shatter them completely. From vocals to compositions, to interludes, undertones, and swirling effects (and everything in between), the variety in genre — and the skill at which it is presented — is much more than we could ask for. For more information, call (212) 679-2222.

Those are are picks and we’re sticking to ‘em. Who’s on your To See List this weekend?
