Concert Picks: Future People, Niki & The Dove, Jonny Polonsky…

futurepeople Concert Picks: Future People, Niki & The Dove, Jonny Polonsky...

Do you hear that? Not only is the sweet sound of summer rolling its hypnotic beat, but the tantalizing siren song of the weekend is also competing for attention. Even with June gloom making  an appearance, the fact that it tends to burn off with just enough time to enjoy the sunset means it’s also on board with the seasonal awesomeness. In alignment with the idea of awesomeness, therefore, not only do we have lined up for you a slew of choice musical acts for the weekend, but a number of shows that will be friendly to your budget without forgoing substance.

Which of course leaves room for more green to go towards the BBQs, get-togethers, and happy hour meet ups likely to happen this summer. You’re welcome. Check out our picks for the weekend below…

  • Future People | Friday, June 15 | 9:00 pm | 21+ | $5 | The Mint, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Currently our favorite Los Angeles-based-by-way-of-Baltimore band, Future People seems to be from where their name suggests. They may very well be too cool for school, so cool that they’re delivering the lecture at a fairly non-stop pace. Similar in a sense to MGMT, and possibly fellow favorites Foster The People, we are loving how such mellow electronic bass beats along to the rhythm of our best and worst days, providing an overall varied spectrum of musical expression one can appreciate at all times. Check out their four-track EP, including the track “Get Nice Tonight”, for free download here. With Double Duchess, The Burning Hotel – Buy Tickets
  • Niki & The Dove | Friday, June 15 | 10:00 pm | 21+ | Free with RSVP | Tribeca Grand Hotel, New York, NY – Map | Pseudo-lo-fi alternative pop with an electronic twist, the vocal-instrumental duo has garnered a loyal audience with a glittery take on a concrete musical standard. Pairing a singer-songwriter vibe with enough elemental flashiness to keep things fresh, the result is an in-your-face, intellectual, and forward-thinking take on a genre that won’t beg a press of the reset button any time soon. With DJ Zara Zachrisson, DJ Prince Terrence, and special guests.
  • Dawes | Saturday, June 16 | 7:00 pm | All Ages | Free | Central Park Summerstage, New York, NY – Map | Delivering a music style akin to classic favorites such as Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Jackson Browne, and other who defined an era, the Los Angeles based band places themselves in good company, in past and present form. They capture a sense of youth and adventure, as well as a feeling of longing and reflection, via a seasoned musical expression that most all music lovers can appreciate and relate to. Their style is very fitting for the summer – a laidback, wandering, wondering feel that progresses with each song, symbolic of transition and motion, and all that jazz. With Kurt Vile – for more information, check out the event website for Summerstage.
  • Mustard Plug | Saturday, June 16 | 10:00 pm | 21+ | $10 | Cobra Lounge, Chicago, IL – Map | There’s always room in our repertoire for punk-influenced ska – or is it ska-influenced punk? Energy isn’t at all in shortage for the Michigan-based band. In fact, at their foundation and core is energy, charisma, and just the right amount of crass we all carry in our pocket, if only reserved for the right time and place. With 21 years of music under their belts, their fresh and non-conformist style keeps them current and edgy for listeners across the board. With Los Vicios De Papa, The Dropsteppers, Rocksteady Breakfast - Buy Tickets
  • Jonny Polonsky | Sunday, June 17 | 8:30 pm | 21+ | Free | The Satellite, Los Angeles, CA – Map | Ever impressed by an effortless sound style as we are, Jonny Polonsky takes the storytelling aspect of rock with pop elements to another level.Taking himself seriously and not at the same time, he delivers a quirky, avant-garde style that rests comfortably on familiar musical aspects. Slightly akin to Jon Brion and Rufus Wainwright, Polonsky takes us enough out of our comfort zone to spark parts our brain usually laid dormant by everyday ritual and tradition. With The Family Bones, John Carpenter, Joe Cassidy, Cassandra – for more information, call (323) 661-4380.

Those are our picks and we’re sticking to ‘em. Who’s on your To See List this weekend?
