Back in January we learned that Coldplay and Rihanna would be performing for the first time their song Princess of China on the Grammy Awards stage. In March, we got our first look at Rihanna‘s “gangsta geisha” look and in May we got to check out a behind the scenes look of the Princess of China music video set. Today, after all this time, we finally get to see the music video itself. Click below to check out Coldplay and Rihanna acting out a samurai movie fantasy in the official music video for Princess of China.
Honestly, this song does nothing at all for me. It’s a terribly bland collaboration that doesn’t do much to highlight either artist’s strengths. That said, I do enjoy this music video. While I find the song forgettable, the video is stylistically engaging. I’m a huge fan of films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon so I can appreciate the nod to that kind of entertainment. I’m not surprised, in the least, that only Chris Martin and Rihanna are featured in the clip (and the rest of Coldplay are nowhere to be seen). The video helps the song muchly, I think. Still, this collaboration between 2 of the most popular musical acts of the day could’ve been and should’ve been much more exciting. Meh. :/
